Military Shipping Labels
In order to ship military goods, it’s important to comply with MIL-STD-129, a standard of shipping that requires you to use certain labels—and a standard we’ve been approved to handle at Platinum Moving. But understanding how military shipping labels work can be confusing to many. What exactly do these labels mean and why are they necessary? We’ve outlined the basics of the required military shipping labels so you can better understand the process.
Understanding MIL-STD-129 Labels
Several different labels are used in compliance with MIL-STD-129, typically to describe the contents of the packaging and help military personnel track their equipment. They include:
- Unit Container. These labels are used to describe the innermost packaging of your shipment. They contain barcode markings that define the following characteristics of your military shipment: Part Number, Quantity, Unit of Issue, Contract number, Preservation Method, Date of Preservation, NSN, and CAGE.
- Intermediate Container. Intermediate labels carry the same markings as unit container labels, but are only used when you’ve packed three or more layers in your shipment.
- Exterior Container. These markings define the exterior packaging of your shipment. These markings show contract and content data, as well as several Code 39 barcodes.
- Military Shipping. Known as MLS, these labels provide information that signifies “ship from” and “ship to” data, a PDF417 2-D barcode, and several Code 39 barcodes.
For certain locations, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags are required as well, and they are used to track the location of the military packages, assist with inventory management, and provide content level detail. These labels are used for various classes of supply, including Class I, II, IIIP, IV, VI, VIII, and IX—which covers operational rations, clothing, individual equipment, oils, medical materials, and more. They are usually embedded into exterior container labels and on the pallet level of your package.
The Department of Defense (DOD) also requires that an Advanced Shipment Notice be sent to the WAWF with the RFID numbers of each case and pallet bearing RFID labels. They also maintain an up-to-date list of destinations that require RFID tags. Click here to learn more about RFID and supply chain logistics.

“Platinum takes professional to a whole new level!”
“Platinum moving made an extraordinary showing of moving me from DC to Mexico City, Mexico. I was somewhat focused as this was the primary worldwide move that I needed to orchestrate all alone as I had been fortunate to have the USG move me all my past times. I had a tight window, a couple of weeks in which to arrange the move. Platinum was extraordinary in working with me to plan the review rapidly and the resulting pack-out. The group they had for me was obliging, proficient, and fast. There was somewhat of a postponement in the entry of the holder from Baltimore, MD because of a mishap and activity that day yet that was minor considering everything by and large. They additionally combined me with an incredible organization in Mexico, called Balderas. There were just a couple of days postponement at the traditions/port in Veracruz before my stuff landed at my new able in Mexico City. Generally, thanks such a great amount to Platinum and Balderas for making the move easily on their parts.”
